GBS Outbreak in Pune, India

GBS Outbreak in Pune: 100+ Cases, Suspected Death, and Water Contamination Link

The Maharashtra Health Department has reported over 100 confirmed Guillain-barré syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune, with a suspected GBS-related death in Solapur. Preliminary investigations suggest the patient may have contracted the infection in Pune before travelling.

Current Situation:

  • 28 new cases have been reported, with 16 patients on ventilator support, indicating the severity of the outbreak.

  • Demographic Breakdown:

  • 19 patients under nine years old.

  • 23 patients between 50 and 80 years old.

  • The male-to-female ratio is 68 males to 33 females.

Investigations and Potential Sources:

Authorities are investigating possible environmental sources, particularly water contamination. Recent water tests near Khadakwasla Dam showed elevated E. coli levels, though the well’s current use remains unclear. Residents have been advised to boil water and practice proper food hygiene to prevent further spread.

Surveillance and Response:

Surveillance efforts have expanded to over 25,000 households to trace the outbreak’s origin. A central health team has been dispatched to Pune, and a Rapid Response Team (RRT) has been formed to manage containment and response.

Laboratory Findings and Healthcare Burden:

  • Campylobacter jejuni, a known trigger for GBS, has been identified in several hospitalized patients, confirming the connection between severe infections and GBS.

  • The high cost of immunoglobulin (IVIG) injections, a critical treatment for GBS, presents a significant healthcare challenge.

About Guillain-barré syndrome (GBS):

GBS is an autoimmune disorder that attacks peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and Paralysis. Early intervention is essential for managing these cases and minimizing complications.
